Being honest, Will Self sums it up quite well in the opening quote, that the short-term memory can only remember information for a short period of time, so you need to get that idea/thought down on paper quick!
There are many reasons why you should write things down, but we've zeroed down on the four things we feel are the most important.
1. Memory is short-term, like a leaky bucket.
By writing things down as they happen or come to you, it allows you to go back and review what happened in that moment in time. It's like time-travelling but available to everyone, don't think about that too much as it makes your brain hurt!
2. Good things don't hang around.
Ever thought of something and then ten minutes later thought "damn, what was that thing I thought of?", well us too. When you think of a brilliant idea, get it down on paper quickly. Further reason to carry around a notebook everywhere you go.
3. Remembering what you need to do.
To-do lists, shopping lists, weekly goals - they are things that when written down, can be checked, completed and ticked off the list. But trying to keep track of all that in your mind is a tough task.
4. Decluttering your mind.
Just how Marie Kondo teaches people to declutter their homes through her famous book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up", decluttering the mind also helps to think clearer. The best way of decluttering the mind is to write everything you are currently thinking down. Remove it from your mind, allowing you to have clarity in thinking.
So these are the four compelling reasons why you should write things down, give it a go and let us know your thoughts!
